Centenarians of Brick, Wood, and Stone, Hermann, Missouri

by Anna Kemper Hesse

Anna Kemper Hesse was an artist, writer, photographer, taxidermist, and an important “mover and shaker” behind the historic preservation movement in Hermann and Gasconade County. This book, compiled from her research and first published in 1969, was the basis of the successful nomination of Hermann’s historic district to the National Register of Historic Places by the Department of Parks and Historic Preservation of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. Hesse includes a history of Hermann, “The Rhine City on the Missouri River,” a map of the city with all historic structures indicated her own pen-and-ink sketch of each building and a brief historical description of the same. This second edition was published in 1981 with an introduction by noted architect W. Philip Cotton, Jr.
