German Settlement Society of Philadelphia and Its Colony, Hermann, Missouri

by William G. Bek, translator Elmer Danuser, editor Dorothy Heckmann Shrader

This book was originally largely written in German in 1907 by William Bek as a doctoral thesis at the University of Pennsylvania. It is a complete history of the events surrounding the colonization of the Town of Hermann. This 1984 republication still contains the German sections, but each has been translated and also updates the reader on what has happened to this idealistically conceived colony. The book lists more than 650 alphabetized names of the original members of the German Settlement Society.
