Germans to Americans
Germans to Americans
What started as a genealogical search, the author's attention was soon diverted to the importance of Rhineland and other river towns as an "incubator of sorts in which immigrants from a faraway land might have time to find their balance in a new world." The land enabled these newcomers to continue their agrarian lifestyle while they became accustomed to their new life in America. These German-Americans eventually spread out along other towns and pursued other occupations along the river in Montgomery and Gasconade Counties. Some families who settled the area, and whose lives are followed are Lensing, Grotewiel, Theissen, Monning, Gosen, and Heying, among others.
